★Toward Building Values That Don’t Depend on Systems

When they hear the words “change the present situation,” what most people picture is the hope that the national or local government will change the present system itself.

“If they’d just make a good system that makes everyone happy, we’d have no trouble living when we become elderly too.”

But systems alone don’t solve everything.

You could even say there’s no such system.

Because whatever system is made, if human consciousness doesn’t change, it’s clearer than day that people will divide into those who have a happy old age and those who don’t.

To put it simply, there are systems called socialism and communism, right?

They’re social systems advocating equality that began with Marx and Engels. Roughly speaking, the original aim was to rescue the weak by achieving shared ownership of property.

But what happened to the countries that applied that ideology to national politics?

They became societies where corruption was rampant, the masses suffered in poverty, and only a privileged few enjoyed the benefits, didn’t they?

In this day and age, if you try to rescue the elderly from the side of reforming social systems, in the end it becomes a socialist way of thinking, and you’d have to turn the hands of the clock back more than a hundred years.

So think it over carefully.

A moment ago we said something to the effect that unless people’s consciousness changes, even if outer conditions are arranged perfectly for them, it’s clearer than day that inequality will result, right?

Add our usual talk to that.

Then the answer will naturally come into view, won’t it?

★True Reform of Social Systems Begins with Each Person’s Evolution of Consciousness

To change society, people’s consciousness must change first.

However much America meddles to try to make North Korea an economic power, it won’t happen unless the North Korean people themselves truly want it.

Why did the Berlin Wall fall nearly thirty years ago?

Because the consciousness of the people of East Germany awakened and everyone came to want to live freely, right?

Why do you think that even when the so-called advanced countries lend a hand to Afghanistan, hoping it will become a country that can be run democratically through elections, it doesn’t easily happen?

That’s right.

Because even if you arrange only the outer form from outside, it’s hard for it to take root unless it overlaps with the heartfelt wishes of the people of that country themselves.

That principle applies in exactly the same way not only to a unit as big as a country, but to each individual.

Until you can think from the bottom of your heart, “I want to be happy, I’m definitely going to be happy,” strength has a hard time welling up from within, so it can be hard to move forward.

Support from those around you is very important, but that support truly comes alive when it’s joined by your own wish to change by your own strength.

That’s why, for people, nothing changes unless they try to change themselves.

If older people now, and those about to become elderly, can achieve an evolution of consciousness aimed at true happiness, regardless of the existing social systems, the breath of a new age will begin to sprout from there.

This means that the right way to change the world is for society to change as people’s consciousness changes. (To be continued)
