Shedding Your Skin into a Consciousness Where “We,” “Our,” and “Us” Come Naturally – 8

Untangling the Leanings of Consciousness with Numbers
Good and evil, like and dislike, loving and not loving, forgiving and not forgiving, accepting and not accepting, respecting and not respecting: each of the selves split into two poles within your heart like this can be expressed with plus and minus numbers, like so.
<An Example of Consciousness Balance Expressed in Numbers – 1>
Forgiving thoughts = +3
Unforgiving thoughts = -20
(+3) + (-20) = -17
Forgiving thoughts = +20
Unforgiving thoughts = -2
(+20) + (-2) = +18
*********************
Loving thoughts = +4
Unloving thoughts = -30
(+4) + (-30) = -26
Loving thoughts = +25
Unloving thoughts = -3
(+25) + (-3) = +22
Looking at these numbers, many people will probably think this:
“If the answer is minus it’s not good, but if it’s plus, isn’t that fine?”
But you know, human consciousness actually falls into an unbalanced state whether it leans toward plus or toward minus.
Why? Because if you lean toward “not forgiving,” it goes without saying that you keep blaming yourself, and if you lean too far toward “loving,” you often end up binding both yourself and others hand and foot with attachment born of loving too much.

A Formula for Balancing Consciousness
So what becomes necessary is to balance out the leanings of consciousness and have a field of awareness that doesn’t lean too far right or left, up or down, forward or back.
Human consciousness, as in the example just now, can all be expressed in numbers.
That’s why the way of consciousness that brings balance can also be expressed in a formula.
Like this.
<An Example of Consciousness Balance Expressed in Numbers – 2>
Forgiving thoughts = +3
Unforgiving thoughts = -20
(+3) + (-20) × 0 = 0
Forgiving thoughts = +20
Unforgiving thoughts = -2
(+20) + (-2) × 0 = 0
*********************
Loving thoughts = +4
Unloving thoughts = -30
(+4) + (-30) × 0 = 0
Loving thoughts = +25
Unloving thoughts = -3
(+25) + (-3) × 0 = 0
See? When you multiply by zero, every answer, plus or minus, becomes zero.
In that way, the number 0 (zero, “rei”) is a number that also carries the meaning of “rei,” spirit, which is pronounced the same way in Japanese.
Spirit refers to the state before anything begins to unfold as reality in the phenomenal world.
And that is precisely the standpoint of a bird’s-eye view, looking down on the whole.
So people who want this field of awareness only need to multiply their thoughts up to now by the consciousness of zero (spirit) in order to reset the leanings of their consciousness.
Then the thoughts you’re caught up in, like assumptions, fixations, snap judgments, and attachments, will begin to thin out. (To be continued)
