★On death with dignity

In the Earth’s world today, it’s not uncommon for the families of someone hovering between life and death to value modern medicine so much that life-prolonging treatment is given without the person’s own wishes being properly confirmed.

As a result, what has happened on the Earth?

That’s right: if you look only at the surface numbers, average lifespans have dramatically increased.

Looking at the numbers from another side, the number of elderly people who spend long periods in hospital beds, or who need 24-hour care even when cared for at home, has shot up, hasn’t it?

In proportion to that, the mental and financial burden on families has increased, and it’s also a fact that can’t be overlooked that there are more families living as if cornered, and more people receiving life-prolonging treatment without their own wishes having been confirmed.

In recent years the phrase “death with dignity” has begun to be used on the Earth, but it’s still far from widely accepted.

Over these past few decades medicine has advanced rapidly, and looking at the numbers alone, the people of Earth certainly can live longer now.

About a hundred years ago, if someone lived to sixty, people thought, “That person had a peaceful end at a good old age,” “They lived a long life.”

What we’d like you to think about here is this: do you think the happiness of the person nearing death and their family has increased in proportion to that longer lifespan?

If it had, that would be fine, but it’s clear that it hasn’t.

Why do you think that is?

We’re not asking this on the one-sided premise that there’s no need to live long, or that it would be good to go back to the short average lifespans of the past. It’s a question meant to raise an issue about the distorted situation in which lifespans have grown longer while happiness has declined: “Don’t you think something’s wrong?”

To grasp the answer of truth based on divinity (the resonance of the light of life welling up from within yourself) to this question, it is necessary that you can answer, based on your own convictions, the philosophical question: “What do people live for?”

Those to whom the answer to that question has flashed from the depths of their heart can be said to also understand the answers to many other philosophical questions: where life comes from, why it dwells in the body of the fetus formed in the mother’s womb, why one’s life chose one’s parents, environment, and people and nation to be born into, and where a person’s life goes when they die.

If you don’t yet know what you’re living for, or where life comes from and where it returns, you easily get swayed by other people’s words and actions and by the position and circumstances you’re in, and even in old age it becomes hard to reach a state of peace and bliss where your heart is at rest.
